Day 21 - Overcome Setbacks

“Don’t let one bad day derail your progress.”

Early on when you are starting a new habit you will inevitably miss a day here and there. When this happens, it is easy to get frustrated with yourself and lose motivation. Here are a few tips on overcoming setbacks.

1) Be Kind to Yourself: It’s okay if you miss a day; don’t be too tough on yourself. This can be hard to do when our brains are wired to seek comfort and safety. Your brain will want to tell you that you should give up, that you don’t really want to change your habits and missing days are proof of that. Remember why you started and keep your momentum going.

2) Learn and Adjust: Instead of dwelling on the setback, figure out what caused it. Adjust your plan accordingly to make it more realistic and achievable. See a misstep as a chance to understand your mind and improve. Maybe working out 5 days a week is too hard when you started from zero? Adjusting to 3 days a week can help you stay on track and ingrain the habit. You can always increase the difficulty later!
